What to Do with a Chronic Disease and Pain?
A chronic disease is a long-standing illness or health condition that continues for more than three months, resulting in functional restrictions and the need for continuous medical care.
A chronic disease, as well as physical and psychological pain, are associated with worsening health, performance and quality of life, eventual to some degree of serious physical or mental impairment and premature death. This significantly results in the limitation of one or more activities of daily living.
Factors such as poor nutrition, inadequate physical health-related fitness, human movement dysfunction, and a complete misunderstanding of oneself have led to dramatic increases in chronic disease rates, pain, and suffering on the earth.
Chronic Disease Prevention and Understanding of Psychological Pain Through Self-Knowing
Apart from genetics, some environmental factors and medical care (medical care just alleviate pain, not treat the cause of a chronic disease or illness), there are four things that one must understand their necessity in life.
Lifestyle-Related Chronic Disease and Physical Activity
Physical activity provides substantial health benefits and prevents a disease for not only adults but also children, seniors, and those with chronic health conditions. Physical inactivity can lead to a higher risk of chronic diseases that are related to lifestyle. On the other hand, regular physical activity reduces the risk of lifestyle-related medical conditions, such as glucose tolerance, high blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
Among the two types of physical fitness (health-related, and athletic ability physical fitness), improving health-related fitness is extremely important in one’s health and prevent/treat chronic diseases, especially ones which are related to lifestyle behaviours. Health-related physical fitness improves body composition, movement patterns and flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance and cardiorespiratory fitness.
Exercise and Training Program
A training program must consider one’s needs, goals, and abilities safely and systematically. A low-to-moderate intensity exercise is safe and can be very effective for the general population, as well as sedentary adults. Starting at a high intensity is not optimal for those who have not recently exercised for some time. Instead, one should increase the exercise intensity gradually for better performance and results. The minimum recommendation on moderate physical activity is 30 or more minutes a day on 5 or more days per week.
On the other hand, a training program must emphasize multiplanar movements (sagittal, frontal and transverse planes), as well as include all types of compound movements and, at the very least, should improve health-related fitness. Health-related fitness prevents and cops with most chronic diseases.
Chronic Physical Problems, Human Movement System, and Posture
Chronic disease/pain and physical dysfunctions such as noncontact knee injuries and chronic knee, low-back, shoulder, and neck pain, as well as neuromusculoskeletal injuries are generally more common than they were decades ago. The primary causes for these limitations and pain are human movement impairments and poor posture.
For example, low-back pain affects nearly all adults and is common among workers in enclosed workspaces (such as offices), manual labour sectors (such as farming and factories), and people who sit for long hours (more than 3 hours). All these health conditions and physical impairments are because of abnormal postural aliment and the human body functional deficiency.
Correct posture and the functional efficiency of the human movement system (the neuromusculoskeletal system) are vital in one’s health and prevent or reduce chronic physical limitation, chronic disease and neuromusculoskeletal injury.
Chronic Disease and Good Nutrition
Good nutrition is important to improve health, performance and body composition. To prevent and treat a chronic disease, a diet plan must meet the following four standards
- Good nutrition properly controls energy balance
- Good nutrition provides nutrient density
- Good nutrition produces long-term health, body composition and performance results
- Good nutrition is outcome-based
It’s proved that plant-based diets are associated with lower risk of chronic disease, whereas a diet high in red meat (one serving per day) increases the risk of most health conditions. Substitution of other healthy protein sources for animal meat is associated with a lower mortality risk. Additionally, most supplements do not prevent chronic disease, their use is not justified and they should be avoided.
Self-knowing and the Meaning of Life and Health
Not only fit and free from chronic disease and pain but do you also want to find out if it’s possible to live richly, fully, happily, creatively, freely, passionately, without a single conflict and the destructive drive of competition and ambition?
Wisdom is something that has to be discovered by each one through self-knowing only. And wisdom is not the result of the accumulation of knowledge. Humans have always tried to know themselves and others through people, books, beliefs, experience, expertise and the rest of it, all becomes one’s knowledge and memory over time. This way you will never understand things, such as love, freedom, fear, desire, passion, authority, etc. in life. And when life that is not free from fear is not life at all. There won’t be a healthy, fit mind and body.
It’s only self-knowing that breaks down all one’s conditioning. The conditioning full of fear, jealousy, becoming, competition, isolation, worshipping, looking for love and pleasure, appreciation, motivation, honour, position, etc. And one who is looking for these things doesn’t live freely, joyfully, and compassionately. Indeed, such a human always lives in psychological pain and suffering. So, to live healthy, fit, and energetic, self-knowing is the most essential thing in life. By a great deal of work inwardly, a great deal of watching everlastingly, and without condemnation, such as like or dislike, good or bad, a human begins to know himself.
The Bottom Line
For the writer, self-knowing is a high priority in life. Without self-knowing, there is no basis and foundation for life and health. And the reason behind the total chaos in the world is that no one knows himself/herself deeply. In general, everyone lives in illusions that are imposed on them by others. Additionally, physical activity, good nutrition, good posture, and decent human movements are also vital in life. One should work on all of them for better health, joy, freedom, love, compassion, and prevention of chronic disease.
